INTRO |

The structure is presented, its territory is marked, prepared and illuminated.
With an accurate step I go forward, sensing that precise moment and place,
removing from it the size or portion I need.

In that place I leave a space, a space for trying, a space yet to be completed.
From the portion I took I shape the form, from that form I acknowledge its meaning, questioning myself
if it is a reference for my questions.
A gentle crown, apparently light, where my fingers carved their reason,
conditioning it so it can condition, my brief condition.

THOUGHTS ABOUT BALTAZAR |
It is found again.
What? Eternity.
It is the sea
Gone with the sun.
( from 'L'Éternite', 1872; Arthur Rimbaud )

It was with this part of the poem of Rimbaud, The eternity, that I found the condition I wanted to develop.
This small part is always presented to me like a mystery, because when we repeat it over and over,
its sense is always open and this type of mechanics is what I wanted to explore.
I had the old school system in Portugal as a reference, when I was a child, in primary school, I had
to repeat the same text until I learned its sense, importance and meaning.

Having this in mind I decided to write it over and over, its meaning always escaping.
I do have some moments where I can retain all its meaning , its song or melody, but it only lasts a few seconds of my perception.
On the repetition, the hand breaks, losing the way of the line that is writing and already known text,
the letters become more heavy, squared...
Then the letters become more loose, more fluid and the hand lighter, without knowing why and
how it happens. In the middle, these oscilations that I propose my resistance in doing it, make me lose the
meaning and I dont know if I should write the text wrongly, full of mistakes while smilling at the
same time.
When I notice that, the correct text and the mistakes, together have formed a strange but
peaceful and dark landscape.

As I was developing the work 'Baltazar' I was constantly showing and sharing ideas with friends and
people I believe in and trust. The name Baltazar always appeared in the conversations, being questioned.
After a long silence, between the question and its answer, I decided to answer with the question : Why Baltazar ?!

'Baltazar' is inspired by Bresson's film 'Au Hasard Balthazar'.
The sense of life and the spiritual path is raised as a question reflected on a donkey's nature, or being.
Confronting this reference, I brought a childhood memory into the surface.
In primary school a dunkey's hat was used to punish those who desobeyed the teacher and his or her demands.
This was the greatest impulse that allowed me to develop this work.

'Conditioned Baltazar !'

Saying this in this work is absolutely wrong, because Baltazar conditions himself.
Condition in 'Baltazar' is an expression of freedom and not of punishment.
Being Baltazar, being that identity with all the responsibility and will of what it means, that strange world...
Being and believing Baltazar.

... Where are you Baltazar ?... Are you free Baltazar ?

Constantly repeated questions, coming from a enigmatic disc. The disc of Baltazar.
